Underwriting Manager – Excess Casualty Retail
Location: Remote - GA, TN, AL, SC, NC, FL


Position Overview:
The Underwriting Manager for Excess Casualty will play a critical role in supporting the underwriting team by managing and evaluating risks, ensuring profitability, and maintaining strong relationships with agents and brokers. This position involves underwriting excess casualty accounts, assisting in the development of underwriting strategies, and mentoring junior underwriters. The role requires a deep understanding of excess casualty insurance, strong analytical skills, and the ability to make sound underwriting decisions.

Key Responsibilities:
Underwriting and Risk Assessment:
• Evaluate, analyze, and underwrite excess casualty risks within assigned authority levels.
• Review submissions, including applications, loss history, and other relevant documentation, to determine risk acceptability and pricing.
• Develop and implement underwriting strategies to achieve profitability and growth targets.
• Ensure compliance with company underwriting guidelines, policies, and procedures.
Portfolio Management:
• Monitor the performance of the excess casualty portfolio, identifying trends and opportunities for improvement.
• Collaborate with the underwriting team to maintain a balanced and profitable book of business.
• Assist in the development of new products and enhancements to existing offerings.
Broker and Client Relationships:
• Build and maintain strong relationships with brokers and agents to drive business growth.
• Negotiate terms, conditions, and pricing with brokers while ensuring alignment with company objectives.
• Provide exceptional customer service and act as a trusted advisor to agents and brokers.
Leadership and Mentorship:
• Support and mentor junior underwriters, providing guidance and training to enhance their skills and knowledge.
• Assist in the development of underwriting best practices and training materials.
• Collaborate with senior management to implement strategic initiatives and achieve team goals.
Reporting and Analysis:
• Prepare reports on underwriting activities, portfolio performance, and market trends for senior management.
• Analyze industry trends and competitor activities to identify opportunities and risks.
• Contribute to the development of underwriting tools and systems to improve efficiency and accuracy.

Qualifications:
Education:
• Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, Risk Management, or a related field. Advanced degrees or professional designations (e.g., CPCU, ARM) are a plus.
Experience:
• Minimum of 8 years of underwriting experience in excess casualty or related lines of business.
• Proven record of accomplishment of managing a large portfolio of accounts in a fast-paced environment while achieving profitability targets.
• Experience in mentoring or leading a team is preferred.
Skills:
• Strong analytical and decision-making skills with the ability to assess severity driven risks.
• Excellent communication and negotiation skills to interact effectively with brokers and clients.
• Proficiency in underwriting systems and tools, as well as Microsoft Office Suite.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
Knowledge:
• In-depth knowledge of excess casualty insurance, including coverage forms, pricing models, and market trends.
• Familiarity with regulatory requirements and industry standards.

Crum & Forster is committed to ensuring a workplace free from discriminatory pay disparities and complying with applicable pay equity laws.  Salary ranges are available for all positions at this location, taking into account roles with a comparable level of responsibility and impact in the relevant labor market and these salary ranges are regularly reviewed and adjusted in accordance with prevailing market conditions. The annualized base pay for the advertised position, located in the specified area, ranges from a minimum of $74,900 to a maximum of $140,700. The actual compensation is determined by various factors, including but not limited to the market pay for the jobs at each level, the responsibilities and skills required for each job, and the employee’s contribution (performance) in that role. To be considered within market range, a salary is at or above the minimum of the range. You may also have the opportunity to participate in discretionary equity (stock) based compensation and/or performance-based variable pay programs.
