Job Description

Assistant Vice President – FI Underwriting – Job Summary (Can be located in Chicago area or California remote)

 

Summary         

Responsible for review and analysis of underwriting data to build and maintain a profitable book of business within applicable department under minimal supervision.  Manages agency relationships through continued customer service and marketing activities.  Implement business plan in accordance with the Business Insurance Group’s underwriting direction, standards and goals. Actively contributes as a technical expert in both underwriting activities and department-specific industry knowledge.  May lead and mentor a team of underwriters to build organizational value.  Collaborate with colleagues to achieve divisional goals.

 

Minimum Duties & Responsibilities               

  • Implements strategy to drive profitability, retention, and written premium goals of the department in conjunction with the Vice President and/or Senior Vice President.
  • Manages team and/or territory to help achieve departmental goals
  • Makes independent decisions within underwriting letter of authority and maintains proper file documentation.
  • Develops annual business goals for assigned agents/producers. Responsible for analyzing results and maintaining accountability of agency partners within the department.
  • Maintains awareness of market trends and identifies emerging threats to the department.
  • Has an in-depth knowledge of department products and services.
  • Can clearly articulate the department’s value proposition.
  • Drives training, initiatives and projects.
  • Travel required.

Recommended Education & Requirements             

  • Bachelor's degree and 10+ years of management and Financial Institutions D&O/Fiduciary underwriting experience. Advanced degree a plus.
  • Technical knowledge and skills reflective of progression of positions of increasing responsibility.
  • Demonstrates strong presentation skills and a solutions and service orientation.
  • Strong knowledge of underwriting philosophy, techniques, national/local filing regulations and guidelines.
  • Possesses strong communication and analytical skills to pursue new business and manage a significant renewal book.
  • Proficient in software needed to succeed in the department.
  • Rich network of agent and broker relationships throughout FI landscape.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Possesses underwriting and industry designations applicable to area of specialization.

The annualized base pay for the advertised position, located in the specified area, ranges from a minimum of $154,700 to a maximum of $238,700. The actual compensation is determined by various factors, including but not limited to the market pay for the jobs at each level, the responsibilities and skills required for each job, and the employee’s contribution (performance) in that role. To be considered within market range, a salary is at or above the minimum of the range. You may also have the opportunity to participate in discretionary equity (stock) based compensation and/or performance-based variable pay programs.
