Job Description

Associate Underwriter – Retail Excess & Umbrella - remote position

Position Summary

The Associate Underwriter for Excess & Umbrella is responsible for supporting the production Underwriting team with assisting in an assigned renewal book.  This role will enable growth in underwriting experience, working closely with agents and internal team members to deliver market-leading insurance solutions.  The position requires strong analytical skills, strong desk management skills and the ability to build relationships with brokers, clients and team members.  

Key Responsibilities

  • Binder/Policy Issuance Handling:  Ensure accuracy and process of all binders within the assigned team along with policy set up, issuance.  
  • Risk Assessment:  Analyze operations by review of applications, loss history, and other relevant data to determine risk acceptability and pricing needs against corporate strategies. 
  • Underwriting Decisions:  Build skills to make underwriting decisions to assist the Excess production team to ultimately handling assigned renewals, under direction, with limited letter of authority. 
  • Portfolio Management: Monitor and manage assigned renewal book of business to ensure profitability and compliance with corporate guidelines.
  • Broker/Agent Relations: Build and maintain strong relationships with brokers and agents, providing responsive service and expert guidance.
  • Documentation: Build strong Underwriting skills to accurately identify and assess risk to adhere to company strategies, adhere to referral process, and maintain policy correspondence and policy information in company systems.
  • Compliance: Understand and adhere to regulatory requirements, underwriting and corporate guidelines.  
  • Collaboration: Work with internal teams (claims, actuarial, legal, etc.) along with operations support team to resolve issues and support business objectives.  Participate in team huddles, monthly team meeting with minimal travel as needed.  
  • Market Intelligence: Stay current on industry trends, competitor products and market conditions. 
  • Continuous Improvement: Participate in training and development opportunities to enhance underwriting expertise and contribute to process improvements.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, Insurance, or related field (or equivalent experience) along with 1+ years of Property & Casualty &/or Excess & Umbrella line of business.
  • Strong analytical, decision-making, and organizational skills.
  • Excellent organizational, communication and negotiation abilities.
  • Proficiency with underwriting systems and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

The annualized base pay for the advertised position, located in the specified area, ranges from a minimum of $43,800 to a maximum of $82,400. The actual compensation is determined by various factors, including but not limited to the market pay for the jobs at each level, the responsibilities and skills required for each job, and the employee’s contribution (performance) in that role. To be considered within market range, a salary is at or above the minimum of the range. You may also have the opportunity to participate in discretionary equity (stock) based compensation and/or performance-based variable pay programs.
