Job Description

The Executive Underwriter is responsible for underwriting new and renewal Inland Marine business in accordance with corporate standards, risk appetite, and profitability targets. This includes reviewing and analyzing underwriting data to determine risk eligibility, pricing, and terms, while maintaining appropriate documentation and compliance within authority levels. This role requires developing and managing productive broker relationships through strong service and communication, and serving as a technical Inland Marine underwriting expert for assigned territories and within the broader organization.  This is a remote position.

What you will do:

 

  • Underwrite and price new and renewal Inland Marine accounts in accordance with corporate standards, appetite, and profitability goals.
  • Review and analyze underwriting data to determine risk eligibility, structure, and terms, maintaining appropriate documentation in accordance with individual underwriting authority.
  • Provide subject matter expertise on Inland Marine insurance, including Motor Truck Cargo, Contractors Equipment, Builders Risk, Installation Floaters, and miscellaneous floaters.
  • Meet or exceed written premium, growth, and profitability targets as determined by the department.
  • Develop, manage, and deepen relationships with regional and national brokers, agents, and producers through excellent customer service, responsiveness, and creative marketing activities.
  • Assist in developing annual business plans and goals for assigned brokers, analyzing results and maintaining accountability of broker partners.
  • Maintain a keen awareness of market trends, competitor actions, and emerging threats, and provide insights back to the department.
  • Build and maintain an in‑depth knowledge of department products, services, and value proposition, and clearly articulate this to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Participate in training, departmental initiatives, and projects, contributing your technical and market expertise.
  • Travel up to 30% for broker meetings, marketing, training, and national industry events.
  • Valid driver’s license is required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

What YOU will bring to C&F:

  • A minimum of seven years’ experience underwriting Inland Marine business.
  • Existing relationships with regional and national brokers, agents, and producers focused on Inland Marine, including Motor Truck Cargo, Contractors Equipment, Builders Risk, Installation Floaters, and related coverages.
  • Experience working with company and AAIS Inland Marine forms.
  • Strong communication, analytical, and negotiation skills, with a customer‑centric approach.
  • Proven ability to deliver strong service and build long‑term broker and client relationships.
  • Ability to work effectively in a small, tightly knit team environment, while also operating independently within an assigned underwriting authority, territory, and appetite.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (e.g., Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience; professional designations such as CRIS, AMIM, or CPCU are preferred.
  • Commitment to following departmental policies, procedures, and authority levels to comply with C&F’s risk management controls.
  • A can‑do attitude and willingness to “roll up your sleeves” to help build and grow the Inland Marine portfolio across the U.S.

Crum & Forster is committed to ensuring a workplace free from discriminatory pay disparities and complying with applicable pay equity laws.  Salary ranges are available for all positions at this location, taking into account roles with a comparable level of responsibility and impact in the relevant labor market and these salary ranges are regularly reviewed and adjusted in accordance with prevailing market conditions. The annualized base pay for the advertised position, located in the specified area, ranges from a minimum of $86,600 to a maximum of $162,900. The actual compensation is determined by various factors, including but not limited to the market pay for the jobs at each level, the responsibilities and skills required for each job, and the employee’s contribution (performance) in that role. To be considered within market range, a salary is at or above the minimum of the range. You may also have the opportunity to participate in discretionary equity (stock) based compensation and/or performance-based variable pay programs.
