Job Description

This position can be fully remote, but ideally would be hybrid in our Glastonbury CT office.

The A&H Specialty Business Unit (SBU) takes a forward-thinking, flexible approach to solutions that span a robust slate of products tailored to needs in Special Risk, International Travel Medical, retail and wholesale Travel, Occupational & Alternative Risk, and Pet insurance. At year-end 2025 the SBU recorded $1.4B in gross premium written.

 

Information about the Role, Line of Business and Team:

The Occupational Risk Profit Center is part of the Specialty Business Unit within A&H and writes the following lines of business for Independent Contractors and the companies utilizing their services: Occupational Accident, Contingent Liability, Non-Trucking Liability, and Physical Damage for Independent Contractors with ancillary Workers’ Compensation for employees.

 

This Senior Underwriter will play a critical role in shaping the profitability and growth of the Auto Physical Damage and Liability business.  With a high degree of autonomy, you will drive sales and underwrite our portfolio of products including Non-Trucking Liability, Physical Damage, Occupational Accident, Contingent Liability, and Workers’ Compensation.  

 

What you will do:

  • Focused underwriting on Auto Physical Damage and Liability accounts within the Transportation sector
  • Accelerate growth and meet profitability, retention, and premium goals determined by the department
  • Build and manage agency relationships, both retail and wholesale
  • Make independent underwriting decisions in accordance with letter of authority across multiple products
  • Strong underwriting evaluation of incumbent business with a focus on new business production
  • Quoting and servicing accounts in an accurate and timely manner
  • Manage submission documents to ensure adequate information is provided for evaluation
  • Perform account setup within C&F systems
  • Maintain complete and accurate file documentation that supports decisions, compliance and audit requirements
  • Develop an in-depth knowledge of department products and services
  • Clearly articulate the department’s value proposition and represent our business when meeting with clients
  • Perform Underwriting Audits
  • Maintain awareness of market trends and identify emerging threats and opportunities for the department
  • Collaborate with colleagues to achieve departmental goals
  • Abide by departmental policies and procedures, including authority levels, to comply with C&F's risk management controls
  • Share expertise and guidance with underwriting team members, as applicable
  • Other duties as assigned by Occupational Risk leadership

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Insurance, Business, Economics, Actuarial, Accounting or Marketing from an accredited college or university or equivalent experience required
  • 6+ years of experience required. 3+ years as a production underwriter equivalent work experience preferred
  • Technical underwriting knowledge of commercial auto, Physical Damage, Non-Trucking Liability, underwriting, insurance rating, forms and coverages. Experience underwriting Occupational Accident and Workers Compensation is a plus.
  • Ability to make timely decisions with appropriate information and consultation
  • Proven track record of building strong business relationships with agents and insureds
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills – Outlook, Excel, Word and PowerPoint
  • Regular travel is required - estimated 20-25% of the time (one monthly air travel trip)

Crum & Forster is committed to ensuring a workplace free from discriminatory pay disparities and complying with applicable pay equity laws.  Salary ranges are available for all positions at this location, taking into account roles with a comparable level of responsibility and impact in the relevant labor market and these salary ranges are regularly reviewed and adjusted in accordance with prevailing market conditions. The annualized base pay for the advertised position, located in the specified area, ranges from a minimum of $64,700 to a maximum of $121,600. The actual compensation is determined by various factors, including but not limited to the market pay for the jobs at each level, the responsibilities and skills required for each job, and the employee’s contribution (performance) in that role. To be considered within market range, a salary is at or above the minimum of the range. You may also have the opportunity to participate in discretionary equity (stock) based compensation and/or performance-based variable pay programs.
